A Red Room Original
Amiri Geuka Farris seems able to apply his considerable artistic skills to virtually any subject and evoke from it some compelling never-before-seen nuance or dazzling quality. This brilliant aspect of the artist’s work was apparent enough in the 38”x40” canvases titled “Elton John Red Piano,” “Charles Barkley Decepticons,” and “Sara Bareilles Love Songs”...

"The air is filled with strangely human birds."--Guillaume Apollinaire, from The New Spirit and the Poets
1.
Your wife calls. Asks me to take your keys, make you stay here tonight. She refuses your refusal to leave the world to its chosen pains.

The Bridge of Silver Wings 2009
You spoke... and the laws of physics rebelled.
Blessings upon the heart, you lavishly bestowed
like songs of morning glories perfuming the dawn.
You spoke and glaciers of hidden memories melted.
My addiction to sorrow, you patiently soothed
with sweet oils of wisdom and healing herbs of faith.
An island of lost identity broke the ocean...

One of the most frequently uttered phrases in the United States during the month of February, Black History Month, is the United Negro Scholarship Fund's slogan: "A mind is a terrible thing to waste." While reading Toni Morrison's powerful nonfiction collection, What Moves at the Margin, I found myself considering the opposite of that slogan: an...

An Aberjhani Red Room Original
As a writer, it's difficult not to marvel at the skillful way author Carlos Ruiz Zafón blends mystery, romance, and unapologetic bibliophilic passion to create his celebrated novel, The Shadow of the Wind. As a reader, it's all but impossible to avoid falling in love with the streams of lyrical prose that ferry your attention from the first page to the last.
It...

Brother Bruce-
Peace. I guess it's been a while and I'm sure many things have transpired since we last communicated in February. One thing I hope has happened is that you've gotten some positive feedback from Beacon Press regarding the initial query on your novel. That kind of thing usually takes anywhere from 2 months to a year or more, depending who gets...
